It's the largest orchid show in the entire United States. It's the Pacific Orchid Expo. It's happening this weekend at Fort Mason. And in view of that other minor event taking place this weekend, the Oscars, we've decided we don't need a red carpet. We've got a red bridge. We're going to give out our own awards. They are called the Orchsters. And who'd be better to hand out the Orchsters than the Orchid Whisperer, Bruce Rogers. My new book. Good to see you. This show wouldn't be the same without you. Thank you. Well, I'm glad to see you again this year. You picked this as best picture.

Speaker 1
00:43
They are just working it out.

Speaker 1
00:44
Could a normal human being actually grow a display like this at home?

Speaker 2
00:48
Perhaps one or two if they have a little bit of luck.

Speaker 2
00:50
But this shows the epitome of great culture, great orchids, great composition.

Speaker 1
01:01
Now, remember that orchids grow in every continent except Antarctica.

Speaker 1
01:06
Every continent except Antarctica.

Speaker 1
01:08
And this is sort of a documentary of the many different kinds of orchids that you can find

Speaker 1
01:13
growing in those continents.

Speaker 1
01:14
Henry, it's just phenomenal.

Speaker 2
01:15
This is an array from all over the world.

Speaker 2
01:17
This is why this picture, this really paints a picture of where the orchids are in the

Speaker 2
01:21
state of the world today.

THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL ANSELIA FROM AFRICA.

Speaker 2
01:43
THERE IS A REASON THIS ONE, THIS WON SUCH A GREAT PRIZE.

Speaker 2
01:45
TALK ABOUT A BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL WOMAN.

Speaker 2
01:47
NOT A FLAW ON HER.

Speaker 2
01:48
USUALLY THEY'RE DOTTED, THERE'S LITTLE RED SPOTS.

Speaker 1
01:57
SHE HAS DIGNITY.

Speaker 1
01:58
She's convincing.

Speaker 1
01:59
And how can you follow something like that?

Speaker 2
02:01
Well, let's just get married to her right now.

Speaker 2
02:03
It's phenomenal.

Speaker 1
02:05
Phenomenal.

Speaker 1
02:05
Let's follow her over here with the best foreign orchids.

Speaker 1
02:09
And these are from Taiwan.

Speaker 1
02:10
Taiwan is helping to sponsor the show.

Speaker 1
02:13
And excuse me, please.

Speaker 1
02:14
I'm sorry.

Speaker 1
02:14
We're going to barge in here.

Speaker 1
02:16
Look at these.

Speaker 1
02:17
Unbelievable.

Speaker 1
02:17
These are all from Taiwan.

Speaker 1
02:18
And these are very special.

Speaker 1
02:20
Can you explain why?

Speaker 1
02:20
All very special.

Speaker 2
02:21
These are the newest state-of-the-art hybrids from our friends in Taiwan who are supporting

Speaker 2
02:25
the show.

Speaker 2
02:26
This is what we'll see in the years to come in our markets around the United States.

Speaker 1
02:29
Tell me why this is special.

Speaker 2
02:30
Look at the size, the small size and the spotting of the flower.

Speaker 2
02:33
This has never been done before in the history of hybridizing.

Speaker 1
02:35
And by the way, these are Phalaenopsis, which means that they are very easy to grow, although

Speaker 1
02:40
this one may not be.

Speaker 1
02:41
But come in and find an expert and ask them what is the right one to grow.

Speaker 1
02:45
Now finally, I'm going to pick best actor.

Speaker 1
02:48
And this is another, okay, it's a bit of a stretch.

Speaker 1
02:51
It's not a stretch.

Speaker 1
02:51
But I think the orchid that acts best in the Bay Area is the Cymbidium.

Speaker 1
02:55
Just stick it in the ground, give it a little bit of food, and it will grow beautifully.

Speaker 1
03:00
The Bay Area is like it's designed for the Cymbidium.

Speaker 2
03:03
And there's a reason for this, because Henry in his garden, this is one of the few orchids that actually blooms by itself, and he doesn't have to fake it.

Speaker 2
03:10
This is why this one's best actor, because Henry can do this himself.

Speaker 1
03:15
The Pacific Orchid Expo is happening this weekend.

Speaker 1
03:18
The information is up there on your screen, and you can go for more information to orchidsanfrancisco.org.

Speaker 1
03:25
It's a great show.

Speaker 1
03:26
And it's a better show when Henry's here.
