Henry tours the vendor area at the Pacific Orchid Expo at Fort Mason.
Speaker 1 00:00 We're at the Pacific Orchid Expo here at Fort Mason. This is the vendor area. Speaker 1 00:04 This is where folks go to, having been inspired by the beautiful displays, to go Speaker 1 00:08 and pick up an orchid or two for their home. So we're here with Dennis Speaker 1 00:13 Wessler, the orchid doctor and organizer of the show. And I've got this little Speaker 1 00:17 house here that we're going to decorate with these orchids. I think this is going Speaker 1 00:19 to look lovely right about there. And then I believe this is going to go nicely Speaker 2 00:25 here. And we'll put this over here. Wait, wait, wait, wait a second, Henry. Speaker 1 00:29 Wait a second, Henry. It's not that simple. Speaker 1 00:32 It's not that simple. Speaker 1 00:33 Very good. Speaker 2 00:34 You really, you've gotten all these things here. Speaker 2 00:36 You've gone on this little shopping spree, which I know is so much fun. Speaker 2 00:39 It is fun. Speaker 2 00:39 But if you want to keep these things happy and healthy, Speaker 2 00:42 you've got to figure out where they're going to grow in your house. Speaker 1 00:44 Which one do you like? Speaker 1 00:45 Do you like them? Speaker 1 00:46 I was looking at you. Speaker 1 00:47 No, these are much prettier. Don't look at me. Speaker 1 00:51 So the point is, before you go, know what you're looking at in your house. Speaker 1 00:57 Exactly. Speaker 1 00:57 And by the way, do you like my house here? Speaker 1 00:59 It's lovely. I think it's charming. Two bedrooms, one bath, no toilet. But the woman who lives in here, she's a real doll. Speaker 2 01:05 I've always loved the mansard roof. Yes. Okay. So you've got windows in every direction. So we've got north, we've got south, we've got east, and we've got west. Speaker 1 01:16 See, and we even know that because we haven't ever accomplished. That's right. Speaker 1 01:19 This is north-facing. What could I put in a north-facing window? Speaker 2 01:23 Okay, this is, if you have an unimpeded north window, this is then bright, diffuse light. Speaker 2 01:29 So anything that needs that kind of level of light. Speaker 2 01:32 So for example. Speaker 2 01:33 The beautiful Phalaenopsis. Speaker 2 01:35 Okay, which is the easiest orchid to grow. Speaker 1 01:38 And we happen to have a little baby variety up here. Speaker 2 01:40 Wait, that's not a little baby. Speaker 1 01:42 That's not a baby? Speaker 2 01:42 That's a miniature. Speaker 2 01:43 That's never going to get any bigger than that. Speaker 1 01:45 Oh, okay. Speaker 2 01:45 That's an adult plant. Speaker 1 01:46 Right. Speaker 2 01:46 Probably as old as this one. Speaker 1 01:48 Okay, so we're going to put that in the north window. Speaker 1 01:50 Okay. Speaker 2 01:51 Good. Speaker 1 01:51 Now, what about something like this? Speaker 1 01:54 This nice showy cat layer. Speaker 1 01:55 Where would that go? Speaker 2 01:56 This needs really intense light. Speaker 2 01:59 So ideally an open, bright eastern window or a western window. Speaker 1 02:03 So that would be, let's say, over here. Speaker 1 02:04 That would be over there. Speaker 1 02:05 But you don't want direct light on it, do you? Speaker 2 02:07 Something like this will take direct sun in the morning. Speaker 2 02:10 Wow. Speaker 2 02:11 And will love it. Speaker 2 02:12 Similarly, I mean, you've got, there's another cat layer here. Speaker 2 02:15 And that can go actually into your southern, into your western window. Speaker 1 02:20 Oh, right. Speaker 1 02:20 With a light curtain. Speaker 1 02:21 Yeah, that's the family room over here, over there. Speaker 1 02:25 Gee, I wish this house were bigger. Speaker 1 02:26 We're going to have to expand. Speaker 1 02:27 Now the light curtain. Speaker 1 02:28 You know what? Speaker 1 02:28 We need to redecorate. Speaker 1 02:30 We need to redecorate the kitchen. Speaker 1 02:31 Who needs that? Speaker 1 02:32 Oh, sorry. Speaker 1 02:32 Who needs that? Speaker 1 02:34 Sorry. Speaker 1 02:36 Yikes. Speaker 1 02:38 Paffia pedlum. Speaker 2 02:39 This is another low light plant. Speaker 2 02:40 It's a little more demanding in terms of the watering and the repotting, but that would be beautiful in your north window. Speaker 1 02:46 Lovely. Speaker 1 02:47 Over here. Speaker 1 02:48 Okay. Speaker 1 02:48 And then what about this beautiful? Speaker 2 02:50 this guy needs to be outdoors in the shade oh so this is an outdoor outdoor plant in your Speaker 2 02:56 shaded patio in the shade over here it needs the breeze it needs the humidity and then finally Speaker 1 03:04 something like this oh that's another put that in your front yard this is a cymbidium folks it's an Speaker 1 03:10 outdoor plant does beautifully in this area and you just stick that right in your front yard Speaker 1 03:15 and you got yourself a gorgeous house lovely okay so that's just some advice ask the vendor Speaker 1 03:22 when you buy tell them what you've got what your exposure is we should mention that if you're just Speaker 2 03:26 getting things to enjoy for the bloom you can put there and you can put them anywhere when they're Speaker 2 03:30 flowering if you want to grow them on then you really need to know what they want but when you Speaker 1 03:34 first get them and they're beautiful they'll stay in bloom for ages just about anywhere in the house Speaker 1 03:39 that's great Pacific Orchid Expo it's happening this weekend lots of inspiration here at Fort Speaker 1 03:43 Mason in Festival Pavilion. Thank you very much for joining us. Thank you Henry. So how much do you Speaker 1 03:48 think I could get for this house?
