Welcome back, Cron4 News weekend. Bruce Johnson is here. He represents Minwax. He joins us every

Speaker 1
00:07
year or so. I try to get out as often as I can, Henry. With great ideas on how to save money on

Speaker 1
00:12
furniture. In this case, we're saving money on that piece right there, which is elegant and will

Speaker 1
00:17
cost you lots of big bucks in your typical fancy store. Yeah, high-end furniture has gotten very

Speaker 2
00:22
expensive, Henry. You know, very expensive. So we're always looking for ways that we can save money,

Speaker 2
00:27
but do it fast and easy.

Speaker 1
00:29
- The fast part is the part I wanna see.

Speaker 2
00:30
- Exactly, because everybody says,

Speaker 2
00:31
you know, I just don't have time to do that.

Speaker 2
00:33
I'd love to have that look, but I don't have time.

Speaker 2
00:36
Unfinished furniture, that's the way to go.

Speaker 1
00:37
- Okay, the fast part was a hint.

Speaker 2
00:38
- Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 2
00:40
Unfinished furniture, that's what we're looking at here.

Speaker 2
00:42
High-end furniture, you can buy good wood,

Speaker 2
00:45
and then what you wanna do is--

Speaker 2
00:45
- Where do you get this?

Speaker 2
00:46
- This came from, you can either get it online,

Speaker 2
00:49
you know, just Google unfinished furniture,

Speaker 2
00:51
or you may have a store in your area.

Speaker 1
00:53
- Okay.

Speaker 2
00:54
- And you always wanna get the best quality wood you can get.

Speaker 2
00:56
Stay away from the number two pine with lots of knots.

Speaker 2
00:59
You'd do a much better job

Speaker 2
01:01
if you buy a good quality wood to start with.

Speaker 1
01:03
- So would it be number one, I don't know.

Speaker 2
01:04
- Exactly, good pine, maple, oak, cherry.

Speaker 2
01:07
And then regardless, you're gonna want to do a light sanding.

Speaker 2
01:10
And this is pretty smooth.

Speaker 2
01:12
I'm gonna take some 150 grit sandpaper here

Speaker 2
01:15
and don't need a power sander.

Speaker 2
01:17
And we're just gonna do a light sanding,

Speaker 2
01:19
always going in the direction of the grain of the wood.

Speaker 2
01:22
So that way you won't leave any scratches.

Speaker 2
01:24
And we're just really opening it up so that the wood will absorb the stain or the finish.

Speaker 1
01:29
Now, you said you want quick and easy?

Speaker 2
01:31
Yes, please.

Speaker 2
01:32
Let me give you one where we're going to put the stain and the finish together.

Speaker 2
01:35
It's called Polyshades.

Speaker 2
01:37
And what we can do with the Polyshades is we're going to do this one in classic black

Speaker 2
01:41
because black is a popular color with the contemporary furniture.

Speaker 2
01:46
And the great thing about the Polyshades is, unlike a paint,

Speaker 2
01:50
you can put it on nice and thin so that you can see the grain of the wood showing through.

Speaker 2
01:55
That's pretty.

Speaker 2
01:56
Yeah.

Speaker 2
01:56
It's really, now, does this come in other colors?

Speaker 2
01:58
Yes, several different colors, but we're doing the classic black here.

Speaker 2
02:02
Anything like fuchsia, maybe?

Speaker 2
02:03
We're going to stick a little bit more basic than that.

Speaker 2
02:05
But you can see when you do one coat, you're still seeing the grain showing through.

Speaker 2
02:11
And then if you want a little bit more, a second coat will give you a little bit more of the black.

Speaker 2
02:15
But at the same time, we can still see the wood.

Speaker 2
02:18
And then of course, if you want to go for the high gloss look,

Speaker 2
02:20
you can put an extra coat on there.

Speaker 2
02:22
But the polyshades is a great way to get your color

Speaker 2
02:25
and your finish at the same time.

Speaker 2
02:26
And the great thing is, after that point, you're done.

Speaker 1
02:29
- So that's pretty much just for like tables and stuff?

Speaker 2
02:31
- Oh, well, you know what?

Speaker 2
02:32
A lot of people feel a little, they don't want to start--

Speaker 2
02:34
- That was a hint.

Speaker 2
02:35
- Yeah.

Speaker 2
02:36
Well, look here.

Speaker 2
02:37
A lot of people don't want to start on maybe

Speaker 2
02:39
a piece of furniture.

Speaker 2
02:40
You can buy an inexpensive frame like this,

Speaker 2
02:43
take your polyshades,
