00:20
hello everybody welcome back to our second live hour of corn four news weekend marty

00:24
gonzalez is off this morning well remember the day when the bay area gloried in its winning

00:30
teams from the nineteen sixties through the nineties they were scooping up

00:34
basketball baseball and football championships but that was then and this

00:38
is now one of the bay area's greatest barry bonds is indicted and none of the

00:42
local teams has been doing too well should we say we're gonna have a recap

00:47
so how about thinking shopping not baseball bargain hunter sally sokolich

00:51
joins us with some artsy fashion for the sophisticated woman and the new

00:55
presidential orders to improve your holiday travel we're gonna have that

00:58
and a lot more. But first let's travel to Santa Clara where Henry is standing by.

01:05
This is P. Joe. We actually have two special guests today. P. Joe is one of

01:10
them and Buzz Bertolaro is the buzz. Get off the phone. Will you talk? My risk management counselor was on the phone.

01:17
I got your risk for you. So Buzz is going to be answering your gardening

01:22
questions give us a call 800-448-KRON I believe it is and that's yeah and so

01:30
Buzz is going to answer regarding questions call early so we can get them

01:33
and Pijo is going to be undergoing the rigors of being massaged that's right we

01:39
have a pet massage therapist standing by but I'd say he's already relaxed Pijo

01:45
Pijot, come on. Up here, Pijot, come on.

01:48
Yes, good dog.

01:50
Aww.

01:51
That's coming up.

01:51
Oh, look at that.

01:52
He's well-behaved.

01:54
You know, Beverly Ulbricht is going to be by in our next hour, animal behavior.

01:59
She would say that dog is well-trained.

02:02
Well, plus he loves Henry.

02:03
I mean, did you see the way he looked at him?

02:05
God, our dog's terrific.

02:05
He doesn't know Henry well, does he?

02:06
That's right.

02:08
He wants to get into show business, right?

02:10
But dogs, they make us better humans.

02:13
Anyway, I have, talk about a rebel, a renegade, and an eccentric, one of my favorite people, Anthony Bourdain.

02:20
He's going to be...

02:24
Well, let the stressors of the holidays begin.

02:27
That's unless you're making it a howly day.

02:29
Right, Henry?

02:31
Does this look like a happy dog?

02:34
Well, he ought to be a happy dog because he's about to get a massage.

02:39
That's right, he's about to get a massage from a certified small animal massage person.

02:46
Shalat is going to demonstrate how he can be even happier.

02:51
That's coming up on Cron 4 News weekend.

02:53
Can he be any happier?

03:01
Resting up for his big television debut here is P. Joe.

03:06
Pijo is our volunteer massagee.

03:12
We'll go with that.

03:13
Our massager is Shalabar, and she runs something called Happy Hounds Massage.

03:18
She's a certified small animal massage practitioner, which means that she massages anything smaller than a pony.

03:25
Right.

03:26
So you've massaged like what kinds of other animals?

03:29
Sheeps, goats, more commonly cats and dogs.

03:32
Right.

03:33
rabbits, guinea pigs, and in my internship we worked on lizards. On lizards. I'll bet that was

03:39
a satisfying experience. So Shala is going to be giving complimentary massages to your pets,

03:46
not to you, at the San Francisco annual canine holiday soiree, which is going to be happening

03:52
November 28th. So we have invited, we'll give you details on that, we've invited her here to

03:57
to demonstrate her art. Now we all give pets massages. I mean when I do this I'm giving a

04:03
massage. Yes. And at this moment he's giving me a massage. A tongue massage. Mutual therapy. What

04:10
do you do that's different? Well demonstrate. Sure. Right now I'm just giving him a light rub down

04:16
and getting a feel for his muscles. I was working on him before and I noticed his back legs are tight.

04:20
Peejo's a dancer. He does freestyle dancing so he tends to get tight in his back legs. Hold on.

04:25
Sorry, professionally or as an amateur?

04:28
Amateur.

04:29
Amateur.

04:30
But he is a dancer in what environment?

04:33
Is he part of a dance troupe?

04:35
Yeah, and they turn nationally.

04:36
No.

04:39
Freestyle dancing is an activity that people do with their dogs, and it's fun.

04:43
It gives the dogs something to do.

04:44
Right.

04:45
And that's where they get all the dogs there, they get the music.

04:47
Oh, exactly.

04:48
So you've seen it.

04:49
Right.

04:49
So Pito does that, and he's up on his hind legs a lot, which isn't really a natural position

04:54
for dogs.

04:55
not for very long. So he gets sore. So what I do and what my training has helped me do

05:01
is help detect and alleviate some of the problems that dogs have due to their lifestyles because

05:07
they're so active. They like to run and jump and crash into things. They're very reckless.

05:13
What specifically would you do to alleviate that problem? Well, right now I'm just feeling

05:18
and like I said, I felt before that he has some tight muscles. So what I'm going to do

05:21
is go in there and if he'll sit still help him stretch that out a little bit get the fluids moving

05:28
manipulate the muscle somewhat to soften it up and a dog not very hard at all and because he's

05:35
very small not very hard it's a very very light pressure but I'm going specifically in certain

05:42
muscles that I know are tight so for example like like where well in the back of his leg he has

05:48
hamstrings like you do. So if you take your finger over mine and you press right in here,

05:53
where here, over my, over my thumb, right. And you go in there lightly, you'll feel it's very tight.

05:59
I feel a hamstring. Exactly. Just like you would have a tight hamstring. Does it bother you? Is it

06:03
hurting a little bit? Look how he's suffering. Oh, you poor dog. He's going to kiss you again.

06:09
Sorry. See, now, if you're going to give a dog a massage, don't get intimate. Okay. Just try,

06:13
Just try to keep it on a professional basis.

06:18
If one's dog were not necessarily hurting in a particular place,

06:22
but one just wanted to give a massage that was somewhat more beneficial than your average,

06:26
hey, good doggy, can you give us a quick blessing?

06:30
Sure.

06:31
Well, what you want to do is start out very slowly.

06:34
And basically, if you feel anything hard, that's a bone.

06:37
You want to kind of stay away from that.

06:39
If you feel something soft, that's probably muscle.

06:42
And you want to stay on that.

06:44
So basically you want to stay on the muscle and go around the bone.

06:48
Okay.

06:49
And you want to go slowly and it will help relax them and stay on those soft parts.

06:54
And you want to maintain contact with the dog also.

06:57
You want to go all the way down to his feet and then back up.

07:04
In addition to dealing with physical aches and pains, are there other benefits to this?

07:10
Yeah, there's a lot of emotional benefits.

07:12
For small dogs or dogs that have been emotionally traumatized, it helps them get used to human touch.

07:18
It teaches them how to trust again.

07:21
It lets them know that touching, besides being petted in more of a clinical way, is safe and doesn't hurt them.

07:30
And it's very calming.

07:32
For the masseur and masseuse as well as for the dog.

07:36
Absolutely.

07:36
So, Shala is going to be giving complimentary three or four minute massages to your dog at the annual Canine Holiday Soiree, which is a benefit for Pets Unlimited.

07:50
It's a big deal.

07:51
It's going on Wednesday, November 28th, 530 to 830 at the Ritz-Carlton in the Terrace Courtyard at 600 Stockton Street.

07:59
For information, give them a call, 415-773-6167.

08:04
And if you would like to avail yourself of Shalaz services, or if your animal would like to avail itself of Shalaz services, you can get her at happyhoundsmassage.com.

08:18
Right.

08:18
Great.

08:19
Well, thank you so much.

08:20
Why am I thanking you?

08:21
He's supposed to be thanking you.

08:22
He'll thank me later.

08:23
He'll kiss me.

08:25
Thank you.

08:26
Does he look happy?

08:30
He looks like I'd like to feel about now.

08:33
Well, up next on Cron 4 News Weekend, a check of this morning's top stories, including which beaches are reopening this weekend after the forced closures from the disastrous Bay oil spill.

08:42
Plus, a look at this week's Democratic debate and the zingers coming from the mouths of candidates present and past.

08:50
And we have this live look outside.

08:51
That heavy fog still out there will be with us for a good part of the day.

08:56
It's 8.56.

08:57
We'll have to check the weather when we come back.
