So, this is Debbie Carpenter, and this is Irene Mangum, and this is Kimberly Reiner,

00:11
and that is Jenna Sanzaherro. And these are basically recipes, and these are the collector

00:18
of the recipes, and the authors of a book called Sugar Sugar, Every Recipe Has a Story, because

00:23
you know food always tastes better when it's got a story behind it. So can you explain

00:27
the inspiration for your book here. They are called these sugar mamas. I had a chocolate company,

00:33
Mama Reiner's Fudge, that was one of Oprah's favorite things. And it gained some national

00:39
attention. And when I traveled around the country, I met people that had family recipes. My fudge

00:45
company came from a family recipe. So the idea was planted to write a book and collect recipes,

00:52
sugar recipes, from across the country. Because as we like to say, no one wants to talk about the

00:57
Brussels sprouts.

00:58
Right.

00:58
So we like to talk about the sugar.

01:00
You know, I was thinking about that.

01:01
I saw you mention that in the book.

01:02
Nobody talks about Brussels sprouts, but it's a real accomplishment to make Brussels sprouts

01:05
taste good.

01:05
I mean, this is easy, right?

01:06
It's true.

01:07
Well, you'd think, but you know, you didn't test all the recipes.

01:11
Good point.

01:11
Okay.

01:12
So let's take a look at this.

01:13
And why don't you come tell, come on over.

01:15
Why don't you come tell us about the story of this one?

01:17
Well, these are oatmeal caramelitas, and they're actually Mama Reiner's favorite here.

01:23
She has a-

01:23
I love these.

01:24
A well-known caramel addiction.

01:26
And they were submitted by a woman named Debbie Carpenter, who told us a wonderful story about how she used to spend the summers with her grandparents.

01:35
And her grandfather built bicycles, and she would ride around very free as a teenager in the summer,

01:41
enjoying these oatmeal Carmelitas that her grandmother would make for her sister and Debbie.

01:47
They would go down to the Peeley-Wizley.

01:49
That is a lovely oatmeal crust filled with oozing caramel and chocolate and nuts.

01:58
And it's divine.

01:59
Of course, I'm not going to actually try this because I don't want to be talking with my mouth full.

02:04
That's right.

02:04
And it's breakfast.

02:05
Yes.

02:07
These are buffalo chip cookies.

02:10
And by the way, if you notice, the book cover includes a buffalo.

02:14
Every cookbook should have that.

02:16
That's right.

02:16
Thank you.

02:17
And so this has buffalo in it?

02:18
Exactly.

02:19
See, there's a little bit of buffalo.

02:21
But actually, these are from Louisiana.

02:25
And this is a chocolate chip cookie turbocharged.

02:29
So it's got so many nooks and crannies in it.

02:31
And it's absolutely wonderful.

02:33
Okay.

02:33
And I'm going to tell you how wonderful it is right after I tell you that you can meet the Sugar Mamas today at 3 p.m.

02:43
They're going to be at Omnivore Books, which is a great bookstore about food in San Francisco.

02:48
And you can go to their website for more information, which is sugar sugar recipes dot com.

02:56
The book is called Sugar Sugar.

02:58
The stories are fabulous.

02:59
The food is, well, you know, the food is only OK.

03:06
Thanks for joining us.

03:07
And we'll be having treats.

03:09
And Marty, of course, I'm bringing this all back to you after the show.

03:13
I've heard that so many times and still waiting.

03:18
Thanks, Henry.

03:20
