Henry's Garden segment on rose care, fertilizing, and disease treatment with garden expert Buzz Bertolero.
00:00 Oh, look at these roses. 00:02 Are they not gorgeous roses? 00:04 I'm telling you, my rose garden looks... 00:06 Hey! 00:07 Wait a minute. 00:07 Over here! 00:08 What is that voice? 00:09 Over here! 00:10 What could it be? 00:11 Why, it's Buzz Bernalero hiding behind the lichness or whatever this stuff... 00:14 No, no, Buzz. 00:16 There's a reason why that rose is behind this lichness. 00:19 And? 00:19 Well, I'm hiding it there because, frankly, it was up on the deck and it looks like heck. 00:24 And so I'm giving up on it for a while. 00:27 I'm going to give up on it until next season. 00:29 No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. 00:31 Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. 00:33 Roses are very resilient. 00:34 With just a little bit of care, 00:36 you can get this to look just like the one 00:38 that you were just raving about. 00:40 Yeah, in about six months or... 00:41 No, no, no, no. 00:42 We can do it in... 00:43 Are you going to say no, no, no 00:44 through this entire segment? 00:46 Yes, because you're... 00:46 He said yes! 00:49 First of all, take a look. 00:50 See how the foliage should be nice, dark green? 00:52 This is... 00:52 Buzz snuck this from another plant. 00:54 Well, the one that you were raving about. 00:55 Yeah. 00:55 But you see how light green that one is? 00:57 But isn't some foliage? 00:59 Some roses have a lighter foliage. 01:01 Well, that's right. 01:02 But you can see this has more of a yellow-green cast, not a dark green cast. 01:05 Okay. 01:05 It says it's hungry, hungry, hungry. 01:07 So we want to fertilize it. 01:08 One ham sandwich for a rose, please. 01:10 Exactly. 01:11 And you can see it even a little bit more dramatic on this variety over here. 01:13 Which we're also hiding. 01:14 Okay. 01:15 So what are we going to feed it with, Buzz Bernalero? 01:17 Well, we have lots of choices when it comes to fertilizer. 01:20 We can use the Miracle-Gro. 01:23 Or something like Miracle-Gro. 01:24 Or Miracle-Gro. 01:25 This is water-soluble. 01:26 You can apply it. 01:27 This is especially good because of the color. 01:29 You'll notice that this pink color makes your roses... 01:32 No, it's not. 01:33 It's just a marketing ploy. 01:35 Or I like to use some of the time-release materials 01:37 because you only have to put on maybe one or two applications 01:39 during the entire year. 01:41 And the way this stuff works is that over time, 01:44 it just gradually releases its useful nutrients. 01:48 That's why it's called it. 01:49 And actually, this is a new... 01:50 Hey, hey, easy there, guy. 01:51 This is a new product which we're just trying out. 01:53 It's called Dynamite. 01:54 I don't even know if you can find it. 01:55 The plasma coat is readily available, so you certainly can use that. 01:57 This one works allegedly for nine months, but obviously if it's fall, it's probably a waste of nine months. 02:03 Take care of the disease. 02:05 What are we doing? 02:05 Putting a little bit of horticultural oil on here to control the black spot. 02:09 Hey, Buzz, whoa. 02:10 Maybe we just should help people understand what this is by showing them the label. 02:14 It's all-season oil. 02:16 Any kind of a horticultural or dormant oil. 02:19 Exactly. 02:20 It can be applied even in warm temperatures. 02:21 However, I wouldn't put it on when the temperatures are really hot. 02:24 Now, one thing that Buzz is doing that I would not recommend, but what the heck do I know about roses, is you really need to pull off the diseased leaves. 02:31 But I would wait until some of the new foliage come out and then take it off. 02:34 But isn't this going to make the other leaves sick no matter what you do? 02:37 It may, because, see, these are diseases that occur when moisture sits on the leaves after the sun goes down. 02:42 So with it being a lot drier now or out of the rainy season, we should be able to kind of hedge on that. 02:47 My problem is that with hot temperatures is that this near, this naked stems are going 02:52 to burn with the heat so we don't want to take too much foliage off. 02:55 Okay. 02:56 That's my rationale. 02:57 Okay. 02:57 Well, that's a sneaky rationale to justify the fact that you don't want to be pulling 03:01 the foliage off. 03:01 Now, what is this? 03:02 Well, we had just taken two steps to solve the problem. 03:05 That was putting on the horticultural oil for diseases. 03:08 We've also put the fertilizer on. 03:10 But we could use this product right here and do it all at one time. 03:14 This is an unpaid plug, ladies and gentlemen. 03:16 This is chemical. 03:17 I mean, this is not organic fertilizer and horticultural oil is organic. 03:23 This ain't. 03:24 This is a one step job. 03:26 It's easy. 03:26 It's one step. 03:27 You don't have to spray, you can put it on with a bucket, water it. 03:29 So how do you do it? 03:30 What do you do? 03:31 Henry. 03:32 What? 03:34 You ripped the label off. 03:35 I didn't rip the label off. 03:37 It's under... 03:39 You know what this is? 03:40 This is like the lottery. 03:41 This is the scratch. 03:43 Look, I won. 03:44 Wait a minute. 03:44 I got the other one. 03:45 Where's the other one? 03:46 Oh, here's the other one. 03:47 One of the problems with... 03:48 It's a backup one. 03:49 You know those peel-off label things like this? 03:50 Yeah, yeah. 03:51 Is that they're awful if you get them wet, which I did on that one, too. 03:55 Okay, so, you know, the most important lesson, perhaps, in this segment of Henry's Garden, 04:00 is don't let the labels get wet on silly peel-off. 04:04 All right, all right, plan C. 04:06 Message to Bayer. 04:07 Got your cell phone? 04:08 Get your cell phone? 04:08 Yeah. 04:09 Call your favorite independent garden center and ask him what the directions are. 04:12 Okay, actually, I'm gonna call Bayer and say, 04:14 "Why are you doing this to these labels? 04:17 Can't you come up with a simpler system?" 04:17 - Okay, here's the number, 1-8-8-7-7, Bayer. 04:20 - You can't call Bayer and they'll tell you. 04:22 - Yeah. - Great. 04:22 Is there anything else we need to do for this poor plant? 04:25 - Water. - Lots of water. 04:26 Roses like some moisture, and with that, boom, 04:28 it's gonna explode and be fabulous. 04:32 - Not happening yet.
