Henry shares a personal story he's still uncomfortable talking about.
00:00 You know, I'm still uncomfortable talking about this. 00:03 The first time I ever visited my future in-laws home, I borrowed their car and managed to scrape the side of it, backing out of the garage. 00:10 Now, you know, and that's minor, right? 00:12 But that is just one of those awful, awkward moments that stay with you for the rest of your life. 00:16 Well, if that isn't enough for you, there's a whole book of them. 00:20 Awkward, what to do when life makes you cringe. 00:23 Sam Schofield compiled all of these wonderful memoirs. 00:29 So obviously, how many of these would apply to you, would you say? 00:34 Well, if you take out the ones that happened to my friends, about 95%. 00:39 Wow. 00:40 And you're, personally, what would be your most cringeworthy moment? 00:46 You know, it's a little inappropriate, but I'll go for it anyway. 00:49 It was a situation in bed, and I called someone the wrong name. 00:56 Oh. 00:58 Oh, dear. 00:58 and in addition ladies and gentlemen she's on here admitting it I am I am it happened okay 01:05 the worst moments other than the all those awful sexual moments which clearly are you know they 01:11 take the cake yeah but beyond that where does most of the awkwardness come in life do you think from 01:17 having compiled all of these oh a lot of dating yeah in that same in that same realm for um you 01:24 know if you have to break up with somebody and then you see them immediately afterwards yeah 01:28 That's pretty bad. 01:29 It's good to be nice in that situation and not make it worse, I think. 01:33 Right. 01:35 I guess meeting somebody who has done you wrong in one fashion or another. 01:40 Yeah. 01:40 Yeah, you could. 01:41 I feel like in that situation, you'd actually want to make it worse for them. 01:44 And so you'd make it more awkward to kind of punish them for their... 01:49 And lying. 01:51 Lying. 01:52 Lying is awkward. 01:53 For example, what kinds of lying situations have you run into? 01:57 Well, you know, we all call in sick occasionally, sick when we're not actually sick, when it's a sunny day. 02:02 And, you know, say you are in the grocery store buying beer, wearing your swimsuit, and your co-worker walks in and sees you. 02:09 Or your boss. 02:10 You're busted, you know? 02:12 Yeah, so you can either lie more and play it off, or you can, you know, admit it and hope for the best. 02:19 So speaking of situations at work, there's one particular situation that I don't know how you possibly deal with. 02:26 You know, if your coworker has a hygiene issue is one that I've run into. 02:31 That's a nice way of saying smells. 02:33 Yes, they smell bad. 02:34 Either it's too much cologne or perfume or they just don't shower often enough. 02:38 That can really have a negative effect on your life. 02:40 And the answer for all of these, the solution for awkwardness? 02:43 Well, it depends on the situation. 02:45 For the smelly coworker, I think the best thing is to be very respectful and approach them and say, 02:51 look, you know, I know this is really awkward and I hope you'll bear with me, 02:54 but your scent is affecting my life in a negative fashion. 02:59 And go from there, you know. 03:00 Yeah, and good luck. 03:01 Just lay it out, lay it out. 03:02 And good luck, ladies and gentlemen. 03:04 Sam Schelfelter has written, 03:06 Awkward, what to do when life makes you cringe. 03:10 It's loaded with terrifying moments. 03:13 But if you have a little bit of schadenfreude, you'll enjoy it. 03:17 Thank you very much for joining us. 03:19 And now two people who have never, ever done anything embarrassing in their lives. 03:24 At least not this morning. 03:25 Who was? 03:26 Not yet. 03:29 I know Schadenfreude and Henry. 03:31 You ought to explain to everybody that. 03:32 I'm glad it's your pain and not mine. 03:35 Yeah, it's taking pleasure. 03:36 Taking pleasure in somebody else's pain. 03:38 Yes, exactly. 03:39 All right. 03:40 Well, still to come across for Newsweek, 03:41 and we'll have the latest on that shooting outside a warehouse party in San Leandro over.
