00:00 Whiskey Fest! 00:01 Whiskey Fest! 00:02 Whiskey Fest! 00:03 No! 00:04 Yes! 00:06 Hundreds and hundreds of whiskeys and thousands and thousands of happy whiskey tasters will 00:12 be assembling on Friday night for the annual Whiskey Fest event in which folks imbibe and 00:18 enjoy fabulous food and generally learn the joys of whiskey. 00:23 We have with us Robin Cooper. 00:25 Henry is the Whiskey Specialist for Sky Spirits and he is going to give us a quick education 00:29 on whiskey, okay? 00:31 So just for starters, what have you given us here that we're going to start with? 00:35 Henry this is Glen Grant. 00:38 This is a Speyside. 00:39 It's one of the lightest single malt whiskeys that you get. 00:42 In fact, this is one of the lightest whiskeys. 00:44 So this is sort of like whisking with training wheels a little? 00:46 A little bit. 00:47 I mean I liken this to sipping apple juice. 00:49 It really is so easy going. 00:51 Right. 00:52 there's some of the other whiskeys that are a little bit more challenging but if you're a novice 00:56 right that's how much alcohol in here because it's 80 proof okay well so be careful because 01:02 even though it may taste like well it's not like apple juice but it may go down like apple juice 01:06 but it's still pretty strong please please drink responsibly in any of these cases so this is very 01:13 easy to sip as i have just discovered all too easy um we talk about a range of flavors in whiskey 01:20 and a variety of flavors in whiskey. 01:21 So can you give us a little sense of what the range is? 01:24 Yeah, so over here we have our sort of easy-drinking single malt scotches. 01:30 This is a Lowland triple-distilled Ockentosh and very, very easy to drink. 01:35 A little bit more medium-bodied here is Glenrothes. 01:38 In the center here we have two Japanese whiskeys. 01:41 This is a blend. 01:43 Yamazaki is our Japanese single malt spicy, lovely whiskey. 01:47 We should tell, before we take it for granted, single malt. 01:50 You probably should explain the difference between a single malt and your average whiskey. 01:54 Well, a single malt tend to come from Scotland. 01:56 They're made from a mash of malted barley, pot still distilled. 02:00 It's a batch process and then aged in oak cast. 02:04 The whiskey only comes from one distillery though, hence single malt. 02:07 Okay. So moving on. So you've got the Japanese who have really gotten into whiskey and masters of it. 02:14 And then let's go all the way to the experts, the big whiskey, and that would be this one, yes? 02:22 Beaumont, absolutely. I mean, the ultimate, really, in single malt scotch whiskey. 02:26 And what is going to make this so much more challenging to drink? 02:30 This is an island distillery. They use peat to dry the barley. 02:35 It also has quite a maritime influence. 02:37 This particular one is known as the darkest. There's a big sherry influence there. 02:42 By the way, you do want to put a little bit of water in to open it up. 02:45 I would say so. 02:46 It just increases the intensity. 02:47 So what you're getting here, Henry, is a lot of smoke. 02:49 Oh, yeah. 02:50 Chocolaty nose. 02:52 Some, you know, toasty, nutty, dry, fruity. 02:54 But that is not hard to drink. 02:56 It's just got a lot of complexity to it. 02:58 Big whiskey. 02:58 Big complexity. 02:59 Wow. 03:00 But the peat and the smoke. 03:02 Yes. 03:02 Definitely. 03:03 So you can try all of these whiskeys at the Whiskey Fest, which is happening this Friday. 03:09 It's happening at the San Francisco Marriott. 03:12 and you can go to maltadvocate.com 03:15 the tickets, well, I'm not going to say 03:17 they're cheap, but it's actually a bargain 03:19 because of the amount of different 03:20 flavors that you get 03:22 and the education, and of course they lay on a great spread 03:25 lots of wonderful food 03:27 to pair with your whiskeys 03:29 okay, thank you very much for joining us 03:31 give me a toaster 03:33 good health to you 03:35 and we'll be back with 03:36 believe it or not, with Irish musicians 03:39 coming up on Grand Four News weekend 03:41 Thank you.
